Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship

altHerschel S. Horowitz, DDS, MPH was an internationally known dental epidemiologist, educator and public health advocate whose work focused on the prevention of tooth decay, the most common disease of childhood. Studies he and colleagues conducted provided the evidence for the efficacy and effectiveness of community and school-based fluoride and dental sealant programs now used in the US and abroad to prevent this disease. His research was aimed at identifying measures that were not only safe and effective but that also were easy to apply, low in cost and acceptable to the public. His goal was to identify programs that benefit those most in need and that reach the largest number of individuals.

Dr. Horowitz was a leader in dental public health and left us with a wonderful legacy. To build on this legacy Alice Horowitz and her family have worked with the AAPHD Foundation to establish an annual scholarship to a dentist who is entering the discipline of public health through a masters level degree program in public health; and a scholarship to a dental hygienist who is pursuing a career in dental public health.  

The Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship for Dentists provides financial support for Masters of Public Health (MPH) tuition and other expenses and is awarded in the amount of $10,000 per recipient. Those selected for this scholarship are urged to 'pay back' the funding by completing a residency program in dental public health, taking the Board of Dental Public Health and engaging in the discipline of dental public health.

The Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship for Dental Hygienists, created in 2023, provides financial support (up to $7,500) for hygienists to pursue a Masters of Public Health (MPH) or equivalent degree accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) or doctoral degree (DrPH, PhD) in a dental public health related area.

The scholarships are made possible through donations to the AAPHD Foundation and contributions from the family of Dr. Herschel S. Horowitz. 

2026-2027 Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship - Dentist

$10,000 Scholarship to support dentists  to pursue an MPH degree accredited by the CEPH or an advanced education  program in dental public health accredited by CODA.

Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship - Dentist Application

2026-2027 Herschel S. Horowitz Scholarship - Dental Hygienist

$7,500 Scholarship to support hygienists to pursue an MPH or equivalent degree accredited by the CEPH or other unique educational opportunities in dental public health.  It is expected payment will be made to the school to offset tuition expenses.
